EFC Mission & Ends Policies
Eastside Food Cooperative will provide wholesome, high-quality natural and organic food at the lowest possible cost to members, volunteers and customers. The cooperative is committed to building community through volunteerism, neighborhood reinvestment and local participation. Our actions, policies and products will reflect our role as an environmental steward of our planet and will be guided by the Rochdale cooperative principles.

Eastside Food Co-op’s Board of Directors conducts its business using the Policy Governance® model, as do the boards of many cooperatives throughout the country.
In this model, the board drafts policy in four categories to direct the cooperative.
Ends policy — The board defines which human needs are to be met, for whom, and at what cost. Written with a long-term perspective, these mission-related policies embody the board's long-range vision. Virtually every initiative that management pursues in the course of a year is guided by an element of these policies.
Here is Eastside Food Co-op’s current Ends policy language:
EFC is at the forefront of a prosperous and fair cooperative economy. We provide access to healthy food, foster positive environmental impacts, cultivate a thriving community in our neighborhood, and educate members for a sustainable future.
Executive Limitations policy — the board establishes the boundaries of acceptability within which staff methods and activities can be left to staff.
Board-staff Linkage policy — The board clarifies the manner in which it delegates authority to staff, through the CEO, as well as how it evaluates staff performance on the ends and executive limitations policies.
Board process policy — The board determines its philosophy, its accountability, and specifics of its own job. The effective design of its own board processes ensures that the board will fulfill its three primary responsibilities: maintaining links to the membership, establishing the four categories of written policies, and assuring executive performance.
