Timing, Talent, and Determination
Checking in with local artist Leslie Barlow.
The following introduction of this article might seem like some sort of disclaimer. And in a way, it is. Leslie is among the most talented and prolific artists in Minnesota. But here comes the big asterisk: she is SO much more. From starting galleries and programming spaces to mentoring artists to creating events and teaching at the University of Minnesota, Leslie is an awe-inspiring and tenacious and artistic force to be in awe of.
Leslie Graduated with her MFA from MCAD in 2016, but her collegiate journey started years prior at UW Stout, where she earned her BFA. It was there during her first semester It was there during her first semester wherewhere professors had nudged her to pursue studio art as a major (she was originally there for Design). Prior to that, in her own words, “…art wasn’t a career...” was the narrative she often heard. Despite having support from friends and family, her passion for creative pursuits was considered more of “a great hobby” to those around her. Luckily for her (and all of us), the right folks spoke up at the right time.
Leslie puts her energy so completely into an impressive number of places, projects, and people that would be challenging for most to manage. Yet, she balances all these expenditures and responsibilities with a confident grace that almost betrays her youth. Her dedication to not only her own art practice, but also to those in the PF Studios program where she is Director is readily apparent. She bares bears the weight of all this responsibility with a smile and a nod towards the future. She says, “My art is my greatest source of joy, and also, I agonize over it, you know?”
Speaking with her, even briefly, it was evident that she is incredibly invested in the communities that she is a part of. “Even as a student, I was looking for ways to bring people together.”, she shared..”, she shared. This fall she helped spearhead the first ever “ConFluence”, which was a conference for “BIPOC nerds” that centered on art, sci-fi, futurisms, and fantasy content by and for BIPOC folks. Over 500 attendees connected over the 2-day celebration. Plans are in the works for a sequel.
With a surplus of drive, creativity, gratitude, and self-awareness, it’s clear that Leslie’s star is ascending. When asked about what the future holds, she responded withresponded with two exciting things on the horizon. She’s working on her first illustration project for the publishing world. And, she has an art show at the St. John’s University Art Center from January 23rd through March 1st , with an opening reception on January 25th from 5-7pm. If you want to be inspired and delighted, we’d urge you to attend.
