Our Roof Renovation Project is Underway!
The roof project is upon us! Here is an outline of what we know:
Timeline:
Week of June 3:
Current Electric removes solar panels, which are picked up on either Thursday or Friday by a recycler
Impact: Reduced parking.
Week of June 10:
Interior protection (i.e. plastic across the whole ceiling) will be installed overnight throughout the week.
Friday, June 14th—A “gravel vac” will be on site for most of the day, literally vacuuming the rocks off the roof. This will be very loud outside, and the truck will be parked in the alley.
IMPACT: Noise.
Week of June 17 –
Roof system installation begins! The project is expected to take 4-5 weeks, if all goes well and the weather cooperates. There will be some overnight work, but it will primarily happen between 7a-6p on weekdays.
Monday, July 17th- Fencing goes up around the parking spaces closest to the building (where the greenhouse was), and a dumpster is delivered along with other equipment and supplies. Additional supplies will be staged in several parking spaces in the southeast corner of the lot.
IMPACT: Reduced parking in the lot.
Process:
They will begin in the Northwest corner of the building (over Wellness) and work their way East. Each day, they will cut out a section of the roof and replace it with a new section (this is a very simplified description).
Effects on Experience in the Store:
Noise: Eastside will provide earplugs for employees and shoppers. There will be construction noise, beginning around 7:00am, Monday-Friday. The loudest noise will be for the first 60-90 minutes of the morning when they cut out the section of the old roof to be replaced that day. Regular construction noises (tools, people walking on the roof, etc) will be consistent throughout the day.
Odor: They are using a low-VOC, water-based adhesive for the roof, so it’s the least smelly possible. However, there may still be a noticeable smell.
Dust: Eastside will provide some dust masks. However, the interior protection should protect the store from dust.
Why Are We Doing This?
The roof is very old and failing. Just look up in aisle three, and you’ll see all the tarps and buckets that are there to catch leaks! Basically, we don’t have much of a choice – it needs to be done.
The exciting part about this is that it will help us to be more energy efficient! Part of the new roof system is adding additional insulation to bring us up to code. This should help with our energy usage. Additionally, the new roof will be a white membrane roof (vs. the tar and rocks that are up there now), which is much lighter – almost 2lb per square foot lighter – which is better for the health of our structure.
Thank you all in advance for your patience during this project!
