Staff Spotlight: Karen!!

20 Years of Dedication and Service!

Join us in celebrating Karen, our longest-tenured employee, who recently marked her 20th work anniversary with Eastside Food Co-op on January 12th! Karen’s journey with us began in 2005 as a cashier, where she quickly discovered her love for connecting with customers despite her self-described introverted and quiet nature. Karen turned customers into lasting friendships who are still a part of her life today!

Over the years, she transitioned into various roles, including Front End Shift Lead, and is now a valued member of our accounting team as the Accounts Payable Clerk (big Capricorn energy!)

Karen’s journey is a testament to her dedication and adaptability. From the small store days where sales were just a few thousand dollars a day and navigating power outages was not uncommon to being part of the major expansion project, she’s seen it all. “I really enjoy the value the co-op places on its staff,” she says, citing the opportunities to work 30-hrs/week while enjoying full-time benefits & a livable wage, learn about organic food practices, composting and recycling, and the importance of local sourcing as some of the highlights of her career here.

Outside of work, Karen has a spirit of adventure that not everyone knows about—she once took a month-long solo road trip across North America, traveling 4,000 miles with nothing but her camping gear and an open road ahead. She is also an extremely accomplished violinist and a twin!
